Raising Much Needed Funds

Many, many thanks go out to The Riccardi Family and Shore Community bank as main event sponsors, as well as the 75+ businesses and individuals that showed their support by purchasing tee signs and sponsorships. The event would simply not be successful without their support.

All the hard work yielded a great success. The event netted more than $26,000, to be used throughout the coming year to support the unfunded medical needs of 21 Plus residents.

You are welcome to participate next year, too!  The 10th Annual Event will be held in summer 2016.

Nearly one hundred people came out on July 13th for the 21 Plus Golf Outing at the beautiful Oceanaire Golf and Country Club in Waretown. For many, a challenging round of golf on the well-groomed championship course was the highlight of the day.  Others came out to socialize and enjoy the delicious buffet dinner.  But everyone was there for a singular and important reason….to raise funds to support 21 Plus’ programs.

The planning and execution of an event of this size takes a lot of work. Kudos and thanks to the volunteers of the Golf Outing Committee: Frank Orawiec (Chair), Patricia A. Christopher, Russell Corby, Kenneth Greco, Don Jump, Sheila Melore, Wendy Moore, Zev Rosen and Michael York. These folks spent many hours fine-tuning the details of the day, soliciting sponsorships and items (including some fabulous rounds of golf at premier courses) to be sold to the highest bidder in a live auction at the dinner.  As if that wasn’t enough, 50/50 raffle tickets were sold before and during the event to raise even more money.

Thanks also to Carol T. Jones, Ph.D., who spoke during the dinner about the positive impact that community living has had on her sister, Sally. After 43 years as a resident of North Jersey Developmental Center, Sally was given the opportunity for a new life when she moved 21 Plus group home in 2013. “Our family is so very thankful to 21 Plus.  To see Sally happy and thriving after all these years is incredible and largely due to the caring staff at 21 Plus.”

All the hard work yielded a great success. The event netted more than $26,000, to be used throughout the coming year to support the unfunded medical needs of 21 Plus residents.

“As our residents age, they encounter the same medical challenges as those in the general population.  However, our folks tend to be frightened of a hospital stay, have little understanding of their diagnosis or treatment, and can’t accurately report how they feel. Most do not have family members who can advocate for them”, according to Sheila Melore, Executive Director.

“21 Plus feels very strongly about sending staff person who is a familiar face and gives our folks the comfort and security they need. With 7 or 8 hospitalizations a year this becomes very costly. Additionally, an RN case manager is frequently important in helping staff decipher doctor’s orders, discharge instructions, and new prescriptions. The government funding we receive does not cover all these expenses. Designating the golf fund proceeds to this crucial need gives the residents the quality of care that they deserve

In addition to those served by 21 Plus, the BIG WINNERS of the day included:

  • Winning Golf Foursome: Mike Loprete, John Ricker, Rich Eittreim and Steve Sherrill
  • Longest Drive (Men): Michael York
  • Longest Drive (Women): Anne Kraljic
  • Door Prize (Season Tickets to Blue Claws): Carol Jones
  • Amount to Winner of 50/50 Raffle: $2,353
